Standards-Based Grading System Vs. Traditional Grading System

Innovation is the key in the world of education. Each day a new technology or a new EdTech trend rises with new hopes for educators. With all this, do you know about standard-based grading? It is changing the phenomenon of marking and grading for students.

The grading system is often a decade old and institutions are using the concept of distributing the same grade to a group of students i.e., ‘A’ to excellent students and ‘D’ to weak students. What do you think about it, is it good or an advanced version of grading is needed in institutions? A system that can give students the exact picture of their position is the new need in the education ecosystem, and a standard-based grading system is the correct name for it. So let’s discuss it in more detail in this blog.

What is a standard-based grading system?

Standard-based grading is a system that evaluates and measures students’ progress with some specific learning targets – Standards. These standards can be set at different levels like national, state, or even university levels. A standard-based grading scale can be composed in categories ranging from “below” the standard to “mastering” it.

Purpose of Standard-based grading system

The main purpose of standards-based grading is to get a crystal clear situation of students’ learning and their progress. It is different from the traditional grade book points where you find a single grade keeping students in confusion about their actual position. SBG provides a report card that gives a detailed view of students’ lows and highs. SBG is focused to drive results with more detailed and actionable insights. Benefits of Standard-based grading system:

  • Enhanced student engagement

A standard-based grading system provides students with complete scenarios of their homework, assignments, quizzes, and tests. Standards marked in student-friendly language can engage students in the right way motivating them in their learning process. Moreover, it also provides real insights for the teachers and prompts students to ask relevant questions about their marking in case of any doubt.

  • Consistent measurement

Institutions having traditional grading systems often have a choice to provide marks on subjective style and chosen preferences. Using this system, a student will receive a good grade, let’s say A from a teacher who thinks the student is good in overall assessments. Similarly, the lower grades can be applied through the final calculation and grades.

A standard-based grading approach makes grading easier. Using it the faculty members do not need to wait until the end of the year to provide grading. They can easily standardize regular tests to measure student learning to access real-time metrics and grade levels. This can accelerate top-notch learning and feedback looping.

  • Better communication

Standard-based grading system drives healthy communication, and better feedback, and ultimately accelerates the learning process of students. Instead of simply providing scores and grades, it promotes feedback about the tasks performed along with the overall growth. It also helps students get current areas of improvement and makes a path for them to move forward. Compared to the traditional form of grading in which only one word of grading identifies the complete performance of the students, standard-based grading brings a positive environment that encourages learning and achievements.

  • Instructions are relevant

The grading system in education needs to be more organized rather than just using a single and traditional form that works on bringing direct results in the form of single word grading. The standard-based grading system works better to understand student mastery. It identifies students at a level 3, 2, and 1 so they can offer assignments that are appropriate for that level. It also helps in differentiating learning and makes lessons more relevant for students, providing better outcomes and learning experiences for students and faculty members.

How can it be implemented in institutions?

The best way to implement a standards-based grading system in institutions is to define a specific learning target behind each grade. By doing this, students can now view their learning processes, it also allows students to see which learning targets are being mastered and which need improvement.

Looking upon larger assessments, break down assessment grades into multiple grades per learning target, instead of one single grade. Using Standard-Based Grading, any grade can be easily communicated using the level of mastery of a student. Let’s say your grade book includes grades for things like behavior and work ethic, that cannot be linked to a learning target. The grade book can still provide feedback to students on how they are doing with these non-content-related topics, while still maintaining an accurate portrayal of mastery of the standards.

What’s your opinion: traditional grading system or standard grading system?

Hope you got a better understanding of the difference between traditional grading and standard grading systems. What are your thoughts on the same? With a standards-based grading system, institutions can achieve increased accountability and a clear perception of students and their performances.
