Standards-Based Grading System Vs. Traditional Grading System

Traditional grading approach only focuses on marks and goals, while standards-based grading system gives due importance to the learning progress. In a way, standards-based grading does not bind a student to show progress in a stipulated time and gain good grades. It accepts the uniqueness of each student and hand-holds them to achieve learning goals rather than grades. Here is what is standards-based grading system and how it is different from the traditional method of grading.

What is a standards-based grading system?

Contrary to the traditional grading system, a standards-based grading system focus on measuring a student’s understanding by setting learning targets and testing the demonstration of their learning, i.e., Standards.

The standards range from “below requirement’ to ‘mastery’, which is why it is also known as a mastery-based education system. As per a student’s performance throughout the academic year, standards can change for better or for worse. The grading system focuses on students’ learning progress and makes sure the educator, and parents can communicate about the student’s learning progress.

Standards-based grading system widens the spectrum of assessing a student, as it largely focuses on the learning progress, and its growth and declines to help students.

Key Differences between Standards-based Grading System and Traditional Grading System

S.no Standards-based Grading System Traditional Grading System
1 Setting learning targets to assess student’s progress. Relies on set grades/ percentages for assessments.
2 Assessment criteria given to students throughout the academic year decide is it has passed or failed.  Grades and percentages achieved by the overall assessment by a student decide if it has passed or failed.
3 Students get multiple opportunities to improve their learning strategy, and only the latest assessments are used for grading for accuracy.  Students are assessed holistically by assignment of a single grade at the end of the term, based on theoretical assessment.
4 Students get to know their strengths and weaknesses and thrive for better performance.  Students do not get a scope of improvement as a single grade summing their performance is implicit in their improvement areas.

Why is standards-based grading a better assessment method?

A standards-based grading system is a process-driven approach toward assessment rather than result-driven. The system does not bind a student to a fixed standard of intelligence and performance but rather allows them to explore their own uniqueness. Here are some other reasons, why we believe a standards-based grading system is a better method:

  1. It helps educators provide detailed feedback to the students on their learning progress. This means students get more clarity on the areas they have mastered and move on to the areas where they need to make an improvement. With detailed feedback, students’ outcomes improve remarkably.
  2. Students and parents find it difficult to understand the grading system. It makes it hard for them to understand what factors have been taken into account, to sum up, this grade. Standards-based grading thus helps a student to know where they have gone wrong and what needs to be improved. They take ownership of their studies and work closely with teachers and guides to achieve their goals.
  3. Standards-based learning provides an opportunity for a personalized learning experience. They can be assigned tasks and work based on their mastery level, rather than fit in a fixed box of measurement in a stipulated time.
  4. The system tests more than just the memory of a student. It challenges their existing knowledge and increases curiosity in students to learn more as the focus is on mastering something, rather than achieving a grade.

How does a standards-based grading system help students?

The standards-based grading is beneficial for students in all educational institutions. Here are a few benefits of it:

  • Higher engagement and motivation in students towards learning as the assessment is performance-based rather than percentage-based.
  • Focus on mastering a concept than achieving grades for the sake of passing.
  • Testing their knowledge and skills in real-life. It gives them a healthy approach to learning and keeps them motivated for lifelong learning.
  • Gives students more control over their learning pace or have an idea regarding the areas on which they need to work. Students become an active part of their learning process, track their progress, and target achievement, increasing student outcomes.

How does the Standards-based grading system benefit teachers/educators?

Here are a few benefits it provides to the teachers/educators:

  • This increases the scope for teachers to focus on the student progress rather than holistic assessment. Teachers focus on teaching rather than grading.
  • Teachers work towards personalizing lessons to help students better and improve mastery of the subject. Personalized lesson planning is beneficial in improving the quality of education.
  • Increases the room for creative teaching methods and resources. It also, helps teachers to personalize the learning experiences to meet the needs of a student.
  • Gives more understanding of a student’s learning level, areas of excellence, and areas of improvement.

This was everything about the standards-based grading system. Boys and girls of any age are so addicted to some of the games that they always remain in front of their phones, laptops, and computers. So to make learning interesting and effective, educational institutions can adopt gamification in higher education making learning lessons more attractive and interesting instead of the old and theoretical method of reading, teaching, and learning from the books. Games have a wide appeal that derives joy from games if they are well designed and engaging.

What do you think about using gamification in higher education? How can it enhance modern learning techniques? Let’s find out it in this blog:

What is Gamification?

Gamification is an attempt to enhance systems, services, methodology, and activities that can be used in educational institutions and organizations to create similar experiences to those when playing games to motivate and engage students.

How can Gamification help in Higher Education?
Gamification is a term or strategy that is used to define a process of activities and rewards to promote student engagement. It is somehow a more broadened form of experiential learning. It is a contemporary approach that properly and systematically brings education with other elements and characteristics of ethical gaming culture.

Benefits of Using Gamification in Higher Education:

There are various ways through which an institution can manage quality standards, with NBA accreditation it becomes quite possible to meet stringent quality standards. Academia modules provide complete management to quality standards providing the necessity of students having to conduct a detailed analysis at college admission and management process.

It signifies the commitment to excellence, students also get benefit from the process of continuity in the improvement of quality that is a part of the NBA’s approach to promoting excellence in technical education.

  • Encourages trust in the institution

Institutions having NBA accreditation have a compulsion to meet and maintain high standards. This also increases trust and confidence among the public promoting accountability. This helps potential students and their families to have a certain level of trust in the institution for the amount of accreditation it receives.

  • Improves students’ performance

The modern generation of students expects an enhanced and advanced process of learning, teaching, examination, and result generation. Academia supports NBA accredited programs and supports Outcome-Based Education OBE, which can measure students on criteria like knowledge, skills, and attitude. Also, various facilities and curriculum ensure the student gets proper placement after their studies.

  • Helps in SWOT analysis targeting better outcomes

Having NBA accreditation institutions can do a SWOT analysis, let’s say, evaluation of their strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities/threats. Academia with its modules helps in perfect evaluation, it helps the institution understand where it currently stands and how it should move forward.

  • Promotes fund-raising

Accreditation necessarily helps educational institutions to secure and raise funds in the best ways. With the funding increasingly linked to effective performance and outcomes, accreditation would help institutions to avail performance-linked funding and incentives.

  • Better mobility going forward

It is always important that educational institutions create transparency and provide mobility to educational institutions, it encourages and makes possible easing out the mobility to students and professionals at all levels.

Enabling all the features that support accreditation, Academia facilitates higher mobility to students who are pursuing higher education.

With the rise of the advanced education ecosystem, higher education institutions in India need to adopt the accreditation process to garner the benefits of the NBA program focusing on the betterment and growth of educational institutions.

Process of NBA Accreditation for Higher Education Institutions

  • Online Registration

Institutions seeking NBA certification need to have an online registration as the first step. Institutions can submit the required documents with the registration form using the ‘eNBA’ portal.

  • Details Submission

Moving to the portal, a permanent user ID along with password credentials is generated after the payment of the nominal registration fee. Utilizing the permanent Id, institutions can submit more details like the name of the head of the institution, information related to key promoters, institution’s bank details, proposing programs along with various approval letters and regulatory authority.

  • SAR Report Generation

After this, the institution needs to prepare a self-assessment report (SAR). This whole process is done by self-evaluation of internal work processes & activities. This is an important step to have an institute apply corrective measures and improve the way it works.

  • Analysis & Evaluation by Committee Members

After completing all the processes, this phase is considered as an important one, it involves analysis and evaluation by the committee members of all the information covering all the areas in higher education institutions.

The major criteria for NBA certification depend on various factors like education outcomes, faculty performance, and overall facilities being provided to enhance students’ growth, the main goal of NBA accreditation is to maintain quality standards in many aspects and likewise.

Importance of Certificate Management System for Educational Institutions

With the ever-changing technology improvement, educational institutions must opt for EdTech tools that can ease out day-to-day tasks. Those were the days when students never asked any questions in a queue for any document and certificates. Now with the modernization of the world, no one has the time and patience to stand in the queue and wait for a certificate or any other document. Faculty members, students, and even parents want things that are quick and clear. So it is high time for institutions to avoid hectic and lengthy processes of managing certificates. Automation of all these with certificate management systems is what a modern and focused educational institution should attain.

So, hey there, l am Veronica, and I am extremely interested in getting knowledge of EdTech tools that can help and enhance the education world. In my recent research, I got to know about the certificate management system, which can help the young generation who back in those years have faced the long queue just for getting an important certificate and to those faculty who remain busy downloading the same certificate again and again for different students. Sounds peaceful? So let’s get started understanding the certificate management system and how it can help your institution!

What is a Certificate Management System?

Is talking about a certificate management system a good start? No, before having an understanding about certificate management, let’s talk a bit about certificates, meanwhile, you already know about certificates, a certificate is a document or proof of some activity, achievement, qualification, or a degree like a school leaving certificate or a certificate of award received by a faculty or student. Good to know!

Now moving over the certificate management system, it is a highly customizable solution that leads to complete automation of the certificate generation process in the institution; it is a module or feature of the Student Information System.

In my visit to an institution in South Africa, I especially have witnessed the benefit of using this system. Not only the administrators, but the students, and faculty members of the institution were so satisfied using this system. I asked a student about the process of certification generation, his reply satisfied me a lot. He said, “in a few minutes I got my certification explaining my enrollment number and a few requirements to the administrator”. Isn’t it amazing?

Why is a Certificate management tool more beneficial than manual certificate management?

Those were the days when students always find it like a war to manage the long queues just for having their important certificates, whether it is a school-leaving certificate, or some sought of certification, to alumni certificate, everything was time taking and hectic, and not only for students but also for the faculty members and the administrators who always had to search in bundles of documents to create a single certificate of a student.

The certificate management system is a modern and technological process through which institutions can manage the entire certification process with ease, flexibility, and convenience. It is a quick process in which the administrator can generate the certificates within seconds saving time for students, faculty members, and all other stakeholders.

Reasons Institutions Should Opt for Certificate Management System?

I hope the above points will help you in having a better understanding of the certificate management system and its importance. But to give you a clear perception about it let’s discuss some of its benefits.

  • Quick Generation of Certificates

As discussed above, it provides quick generation of certificates as automation of operation in the institution promotes the on-time generation and completion of the tasks providing easier access to students, faculty members, and staff as and when required.

  • Customization as and when needed

This is one of my favorite and most important features of having a certificate management system in the institution. It avails customization of each certificate according to the needs. Let’s take an example here, there was an event in an institution for which the authorities have to distribute certificates to the winning contestants and also to the participants. Just imagine this task in manual processes! Oh… a hectic and lengthy process, but having a certificate management system, the institution can manage to customize their certificates and can add details for participants or the winners making required changes in each certificate. Isn’t it amazing?

  • Eco-friendly

We already have various things in today’s times that are harming our mother nature, being a bit emotional here, but it is the exact time when we should start searching for environmentally friendly options. Automation is one of the best solutions for this, it reduces paperwork making all the databases available on the online portal. Using the certificate management system, institutions can directly be able to provide soft copies of the certificates to students through emails, SMSs, and other options which then can be printed according to the needs of students and authorities. Pretty cool, right?

  • Data Security

Data security is also one of the most important aspects of any educational institution, but manual interventions of small tasks like creating certificates for individual students increase the chances of errors and data breaches leading to chaos and fraud in the institution. So to reduce all complications, a certificate management system provides complete data security with automation of the certification generation process. Safe though!

  • Cost-effectiveness

Just recall the process of a manual certification generation for a second, oh! How many documents it involves, how many copies of a single type of certificate, and the cost for each document… What do you think now, a single automated certification management system provides a single system to manage all kinds of certificates for one to thousands of students, providing cost-effectiveness focusing on the overall growth of the organization.

My Recommendation

So in my opinion, I will say each process in an educational institution is important and needs to be performed very carefully and efficiently. In this technology updated world, there are various technologies like ERP, SIS, LMS, and a lot more that are made to enhance the educational experience of institutions, but you must choose a very good technology like ERP or SIS that can lead to overall academic and administrative management. After reviewing various small to big vendors of ERP and SIS, I have noted that there are a few who deal with the complete digital transformation of the institution. In my recommendation, I think Academia is having one of the best, robust, and scalable ERP/SIS that can lead to the complete digital transformation of institutions. From small tasks like certificate generation, timetable management, to bigger operations like admission, examination, and a lot of others can be automated using a single system for universities, colleges, schools, and groups of schools.

Time for wrapping up!

So with the ending of the discussion, I must say, if you are looking forward to competing in the Edtech world, automation can make it possible in tremendous ways. So what are you waiting for? Jump on your first step now!
